Canada Needs Emergency Responders

An Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) is someone who is trained in the fundamental principles of first aid response and primary care.

EMRs are responsible for the initial care of a patient, and are often the first on scene to a medical emergency or trauma case.

The responsibility of an EMR is to attend to the patient and the situation at hand and administer care until more advanced medical professionals can arrive.

National Standards and Competency Levels

The Paramedic Association of Canada (PAC) along with the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) created the National Occupational Competency Profiles (NOCP) to provide a  centralized body of definitions and cohesive overview of emergency medical personnel in Canada  and EMR’s have been included in the definitions. There are four levels of competency across the country, Emergency Medical Responder (EMR), Primary Care Paramedic (PCP), Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) and Critical Care Paramedic (CCP).

AEGIS Healthcare Solutions offers EMR training and certification provided by current and former paramedics, and in a recognized manner consistent with the NOCPs. The 80hr program is largely scenario based and utilizes “problem-based learning” in the same way that paramedic education is delivered. Certification is based upon formative and summative evaluation. EMR certification is a valuable credential towards paramedicine, nursing, and rescue-based organizations and employment opportunities currently exist in Canada.

EMRs often find themselves in remote areas, where access to more advanced medical care is a considerable distance away. Their importance cannot be understated when delivering care to a patient while waiting for transport to more advanced facilities. In addition to this role, EMRs also function to fill in gaps in the healthcare system, servicing health centres and clinics, long-term care facilities, and countless remote and industrial based locations.
